The Evolution of Salt Therapy

Salt has been one of the basic elements of our life since the beginning of time. Approximately 20 million years ago, Europe and Russia were partially covered by a shallow sea. With the disappearance of the sea, large amounts of salt deposits were left behind.

1843

13th to the 29th Century

The Birth of Speleotherapy

Salt beds were hidden 10-300 meters below the Earth’s surface and before the advent of modern technology, salt mining was an arduous task. The use of salt therapy spans history from ancient Greece (where “halo” means salt and “speleon” means cave) to when in 1843, Polish physician Dr. Feliks Boczkowski, made the scientific discovery that the salt miners rarely suffered from respiratory problems. Thus 'speleotherapy' was born.

Visitors from all over the world came to the salt mines in Poland and Eastern Europe to enjoy the natural health benefits derived from inhaling the salt particles in these hallowed out salt chambers, also known as salt caves.

1976

The Birth of Halotherapy (Dry Salt Therapy)

Russian doctors and scientists created the first halogenerator (halo=salt), which is a device that grinds salt into a very fine aerosol that is then dispersed into an enclosed environment. This marked the first above-ground alternative for speleotherapy, and halotherapy was born.

First Salt Rooms in Eastern Europe

The first salt therapy rooms started to appear in clinics, hospitals, and daycare centers throughout Russia and, after the fall of the Soviet Union, salt therapy rooms spread throughout Eastern Europe. To attract visitors, they were first designed to resemble the underground salt chambers, also known as salt caves. All of the efficacy, however, is derived from the halogenerator.
